Through the Grapevine: Covid Travel App Design
Through the Grapevine is a travel app that allows users to update eachother through collaboration on mandates and travel regulations in real-time to make post-pandemic travel more seamless.
The Goal
The primary goal of the study is to identify the problem that users face when making travel plans in the post pandemic narrative.
Building up on that, the secondary goal of the research is to pinpoint if the users are up to date with the necessary shifts in rules and regulations that are brought up due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Overview
The Problem
Information for post-pandemic travel regulations are not always readily available for travelers, or are not updated on a frequent basis.

Key Takeaways
Step 1: User Research
We began by brainstorming compelling interview questions, and each selected candidates for interviewing.
Our 5 key questions were as follows:
-
How has Covid-19 pandemic affected your travel plans?
-
Have you found that travel organizations are kept up to date with Covid-19 regulations?
-
What are the processes/applications you go through to plan your travel in the post-pandemic world? What are the benefits/hardships of this?
-
What are the technical difficulties you face when making a travel plan without the up to date post pandemic travel information?
-
What would you suggest could be done to make it easier and safer for travellers?
We interviewed a total of 5 individuals with a different range in cultures, ethnicities, but were common in their travel habits. There was an emphasis on safety during travel, which increased with each interviewee.

User Insights
In our interviews, and from our survey, we found that travelers put an emphasis on the safety of themselves and their travel parties, especially in our current post-pandemic era.
Individuals with previous health conditions, or have family and friends who have dealt with illness are relying on companies and travel agencies to keep up to date with their Covid-19 regulations.
We believe with the use of collaboration and teamwork, similar to how the vaccine was created, will be the key to bringing people together as well as keeping each other safe and updated.
There was a link between individuals who required the latest Covid-19 information to have a safe and relaxed travel experience.
“I like the concepts being discussed. It would be nice to have one source for updating. Some people blatantly ignore things so I’d like to have a source to show ignorant people.”
Shelby, 25
"Yes, [I prioritize safety while staying within budget], I usually attempt to book hotels where they would notify me with necessary Covid-19 updates that will enable me to relax in my vacation with peace of mind."
Nazmul, 45
Problem Statement
A person who travels needs to have peace of mind when planning their trip, and that should not be hindered because the traveler is not updated with frequent COVID-19 information.

The Solution
An app where consumers/travelers are able to self-update their travel experience in real-time and keep their fellow travelers informed of any changes. We want to make an easier way to bridge the gap between travel companies and travelers, and keep everyone informed and healthy to enjoy their journeys.

Key Takeaways
What have I learned?
In short, a Case study is a long, arduous, but amazing experience. I’ve learned a lot over the past 5 weeks, and was able to put all my learning so far into one larger project that I can look back on and grow from. The biggest thing I’ve learned so far though, don’t get carried away with your low-fidelity wireframes.
More Testing
I wish I had dedicated more time to testing my wireframes rather than add unnecessary features. I thought of the app created as bigger than just a project, and though I wouldn’t say that it’s a bad thing, it just ultimately took time away from other important things.
Plan, plan, and plan some more...
Throughout a lot of this Case Study, I realise I spent a lot of time wasted on doing things without a plan. It makes good for creativity, but planning can always be deviated from if need be, and a good plan just makes more time for creativity in the end.
